Thinking Smarter
Story by Frank Nelson, Daily Camera
(Excerpt taken from an article in the Daily Camera featuring Expanding Thought)

It's the thought that counts.
Nobody knows that better than Marian Thier, who has turned the somewhat abstract concept of thinking into a prosperous business.

Thier is the founder of Expanding Thought, Inc. a company she started in New York in the mid-'80's and brought to Boulder in 1993.

Using such diverse tools as a board game she invented, a fable she wrote, even a CD-ROM called "Thought Expanders," and now a book called, “COACHING CLUES: Real Stories, Powerful Solutions, Practical Tools, Thier is in the business of teaching people to think better and smarter. She does this by conducting workshops, seminars and coaching sessions customized for a range of corporate clients, most of them Fortune 500 companies, where the aim is to enable people to maximize potential.

Thier educates executives and decision-makers to new ways of thinking and shows them how original thinking can solve problems and lead to better business. Her work takes her all over the United States and around the world.

Thier was working in television as an on-air host and then producer before the responsibilities of parenthood to three children - a girl and two boys, now all adults - sent her career off in another direction. She moved into higher education, initially as a professor of communications and writing before becoming an administrator, and it was then she began developing an interest in alternative, non-traditional ways of learning.

"When I started Expanding Thought it was a novelty. There were not many other companies like it, nor many clients. Creative thinking was just not valued," she says. "Today the field is crowded, but there is also a lot more work to do. Innovative companies and creative leaders know these skills are absolutely necessary if they are to stay market viable. It is extremely satisfying to witness the results of my work with clients."
